This project was my first time working in an interdisciplinary team, combining CMD, CMGT, Informatics, and ADS&AI. It challenged me to bridge different working styles and mindsets, and taught me how to align diverse expertise into one shared design direction. This experience strengthened my ability to communicate, guide, and collaborate beyond my own discipline.
Client
A multi-stakeholder collaboration within the Hybrid World program, focused on exploring applications of Rotterdam’s Urban Open Data Platform and digital twin technologies.
Brief
Investigate how digital twin data can support the visualization of future city scenarios, such as environmental or infrastructural changes.
Our team chose to focus on improving biodiversity in Rotterdam South.
challenge
Develop a concept that helps residents make their private gardens greener while providing the municipality with insights into biodiversity development in the neighborhood.

my role and contribution
As the only CMD student, I guided the team through the double diamond process and took charge of the design direction. I initiated and conducted desk and user research, including street interviews at Zuidplein, contacting the municipality, and attending a neighborhood council meeting in Feijenoord to gather real insights. I was responsible for translating these findings into the final concept and designing the complete app experience in Figma.
Approach
I led the research phase by organizing and executing interviews, outreach, and fieldwork to understand residents’ needs and motivations around gardening and biodiversity. Based on these insights, I steered the conceptual direction and designed the app flow, interactions, and visual design. Throughout the project, I kept the interdisciplinary team aligned with the CMD design process and ensured our decisions were grounded in real user findings.

outcome
The result was Tuinder, an app where residents can plan a garden and receive AI-powered suggestions that match their preferences while improving biodiversity. My work shaped both the research foundation and the full app design, establishing a clear and user-centered vision for the concept.
